New kid on the block: A concept drawing shows how the six-story Science, Engineering Innovation and Research Building would look from the south. The building will be across South Nedderman Drive from the Life Science Building and close to Pickard Hall.

Science, Engineering Innovation and Research Building to accelerate health science exploration

UT Arlington is advancing plans for a new six-story Science, Engineering Innovation and Research Building to help meet increasing student demand and to further the University’s emerging concentration in health science initiatives.

The 200,000-square-foot building will feature a structural steel and glass atrium. It will be located southwest of Pickard Hall, home of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, and south of the existing Life Science Building.

The SEIR Building will include large multi-use collaborative spaces, large classrooms and lecture halls, and innovative research and teaching labs.

State lawmakers approved $70 million in Tuition Revenue Bonds to support the project earlier this year, and additional funding will complete the anticipated construction budget. Work on the project is expected to begin in 2016 with completion in 2018.

UT Arlington, UNTHSC developing a more patient-friendly solution for sleep apnea

A new system being developed by researchers at UT Arlington and the UNT Health Science Center could make it easier for the estimated 18 million people with sleep apnea to get a good night’s rest.

The user-friendly system alerts the individual whenever there’s an air-flow leak in their PAP or positive airway pressure machine. Users will be able to decide if they want to be alerted by sound, lights, or vibration—or through an app that tells them what’s wrong and the best way to address it.

An air-flow leak is one of the most common reasons people stop using the nighttime masks, says Eileen Clements, director of research at the UT Arlington Research Institute.

UT Arlington joins NASA group investigating best ways to design aerospace systems

UT Arlington is the newest member of NASA’s Systems Engineering Consortium, which is funded by Marshall Space Flight Center and Langley Research Center.

The consortium brings together systems engineering researchers from universities across the country, including George Washington University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the University of Colorado.

Paul Componation, chair of the Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Department, says the consortium is looking at both the complexity of advanced aerospace systems and the organizational structures that design and build these systems. The UT Arlington research team is focusing on how to build and manage a more resilient systems engineering design organization to support NASA’s Space Launch System.

toner scam

Beware of toner scam

Toner is the newest subject of phone scams. Several University departments have received calls from various companies indicating prices will increase and customers need to stock up to save money.

Some callers identify themselves as being from Konica Minolta's Customer Service and refer to customers by their full name and the ID number of a copier.

Others callers say they are with Network Imaging and ask about toner orders the previous month. The caller faxes an invoice and wants the invoice signed and returned immediately.

Toner for the Konica Minolta copiers is provided as part of the company's contract with UT Arlington. Konica Minolta will never call a customer about ordering toner and other supplies, nor will you receive an invoice from them for toner.

If you have questions or concerns about a potential toner scam, contact the Office of Procurement Services at procurement_help@uta.edu or 2-3002.

Emergency generator test on Friday

Facilities Management will test the emergency electrical generators 1-2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21.

Buildings involved are Carlisle Hall, Engineering Lab Building, Engineering Research Building, Geoscience Building, Nedderman Hall, Science Hall, and Woolf Hall.

The test will only affect the electrical services tied to each building’s generator, not the entire building. There will be a slight “blip” lasting a half-second as the electrical service transfers to the generator and another as it is transferred back to the normal building service. Keep computer work in progress saved during this time to prevent any possible data loss.
