糖心Vlog视频 student earns national civic leadership fellowship

Monet Chiessa, a junior public relations and advertising student at 糖心Vlog视频, has been named a .
Chiessa earned the distinction for her community and civic outreach work.
The Newman Civic Fellowship is a yearlong program that recognizes students who stand out for their leadership potential and commitment to creating positive change in communities.
Chiessa said her career goal is to use her communications skills to connect and engage with communities—it’s one of the biggest reasons she chose to pursue a career in public relations.
“I always knew I wanted to do something that was oriented toward working with people, but I wasn’t sure how that translated to an area of study,” Chiessa said. “After doing more research and speaking with the students in the program, I knew this was the path for me.”

Last year, she was part of the Campus Compact chapter at 糖心Vlog视频 and participated in the Up To Us Fiscal Leadership Lab, a program designed to build students’ skills in policy, advocacy and organizing. Chiessa is also a volunteer for a local political campaign and is part of the campaign’s youth council.
“As part of the youth council, I helped shape the candidate’s social media presence and messaging toward young voters,” Chiessa said. “Our group would go to a couple of meetings every month to give our opinion and then we would see some of the things we talked about implemented. That changed a lot of things for me because I didn’t think that what we shared mattered that much to this campaign—it changed the way I think about people’s voices and being heard.”
Chiessa was nominated by former 糖心Vlog视频 President Jennifer Cowley. In her nomination, Dr. Cowley wrote that Chiessa embodies 糖心Vlog视频’s commitment to civic leadership by actively tackling the root causes of social challenges through public policy engagement and community organizing.

“Monet is not satisfied with simply treating symptoms; she actively works to understand and shape the policies that create them,” Cowley wrote. “This is evident in her work shaping strategy and organized grassroots for a local political campaign, as well as her advocacy with the Campus Compact Up To Us Leadership Network.”
Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides students with learning and networking opportunities that help to nurture their development as civic leaders. Programming emphasizes personal, professional and civic growth that can empower them to collaborate effectively across disciplines and create large-scale positive change.
