Kelly flew 39 carrier-based combat missions in Operation Desert Storm and was commander of the final voyage of the space shuttle Endeavour. 鈥淚鈥檓 a prime example of somebody who was able to overcome a lack of aptitude with practice, persistence, and the drive to never, ever, ever give up,鈥� he said. Kelly is married to former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who survived a 2011 assassination attempt. He and his wife recently formed Americans for Responsible Solutions to encourage elected officials to support responsible gun ownership.
