Phishing scam targets college students
|
|
Scammers posing as university officials are sending emails to students urging them to view a message about their COVID-19 stimulus checks.
This phishing scam asks students to click on a link that requires their university login information. Once the link is clicked, the scammers then have access to your personal information and can wreak havoc.
By following these guidelines, you can protect yourself from these bad guys:
- Verify web address and always manually type the address into your browser.
- Do not use websites or services that offer to be an intermediary between you and the IRS by processing your economic impact payment.
- Never share your personal information. Bad guys may claim to be from the IRS or another agency and offer to assist you with your stimulus payment. Stimulus payments will come directly from the Treasury Department.
- If you get an email from a sender you do not recognize, do not click on links or attachments within that email.
- Do not accept or deposit a stimulus check that comes through the mail from anyone other than the Treasury Department.
